REALITY CATCHES UP WITH TRUMP (and ALL of US)

We are just eight months away from what could spell the end of our unique experiment in democracy.  Some, (like one of my adult daughters) are frightened enough by this possibility to contemplate a move out-of-country. Sharing her fearfulness, my wife and I have entertained similar thoughts (as have others known to us), but we demur, enjoying the nearness of our children and grandchildren, and still believing in the resilience and integrity of our great nation. However, if Donald J. Trump and his sycophants win re-election, the duress and oppression that is sure to come could impact the life decisions of a good many of us.

Others feel quite differently. Trump’s approval ratings have risen as high as 54%, according to one or two outlier polls, but an average of major polls seems to indicate approval at around 42-45%.  However, we know from 2016 just how inaccurate that form of measurement can be!  Indeed, the polls fail to capture variables that are at the core of Trump’s win in the Electoral College. He only needs 270 votes there to win re-election and just about 30 key battleground districts in 6 states offered enough votes for him to gain over 300 electoral votes in 2016.  If Wisconsin is any indicator, he could possibly do that again, but with a smaller margin.
On the other hand, something else may be happening according to a recent Quinnipiac poll indicating that democratic candidates are leading Trump by 2-6% points.  That could make the electoral vote very close, perhaps favoring the democratic candidate.

What we can’t forget (nor overcome, apparently) is the probability that the Russians will interfere in our presidential election once again (see past Blogs for 6/17/2019; 11/9/2018; 11/14/2016).  In fact, it has been reported just recently that they are already attempting to influence the democratic primaries in order to gain an advantage for Bernie Sanders.  Some commentators make it seem that Bernie is therefore a favorite of the Russians -- missing the point entirely.  The Russians don’t favor Bernie for President, just for the Democratic nomination for president, precisely because they believe Trump will be able to defeat him if enough voters run away from the ‘socialist democrat’ label (and poll results from Pennsylvania and Michigan seem to back-up that hypothesis).  Russia is working for a Trump re-election; Sanders's nomination is just one tactic within that plan.

Since his acquittal before the Senate, Trump has been on a rampage of revenge --getting even with those he claims to be “never Trumpers” and who supposedly make up the “Deep State” that he says oppose him at every opportunity within the federal bureaucracy (see my Blog for 10/2/2019). To refresh our memories a bit, here are some examples of what he has done just recently to denigrate or to get rid of those who disappoint, criticize and/or indicate any disloyalty toward him.
1.     In a bold attempt to intimidate any government officials who speak out against him, Trump had Lt. Colonel Vindman (and his twin brother) escorted from their DSA assignments at the White House.  He also recalled U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland; both moves were widely condemned as vindictive.
2.     Sent detailed memos about disloyal government officials he wanted fired, according to more than a dozen sources who spoke with Axios.com.  Trump’s distrust of people inside the White House and the federal bureaucracy has intensified since his impeachment and acquittal, and he thinks his government is filled with “snakes” he wants fired and replaced.”
3.     He verbally attacked Senator Mitt Romney who, he said, “could undergo some things.” Sounds much like his approach to former Ukrainian ambassador, Marie Yovanovitch, who testified before Congress that she was getting a similar message from Trump’s people when they believed she was an obstacle to their agenda. Trump Jr. suggested Romney be evicted from the Republican Party, and several allies of Trump have shunned Romney.  One Utah state legislator even spoke of introducing recall vote legislation.
4.     In his attempts to de-construct the federal bureaucracy, Trump has put the health and welfare of the American people on the chopping block. In certain parts of the federal bureaucracy, especially those departments that express or demonstrate some opposition to or difficulty with his ideology and/or his behaviors, he has cut staff, fired directors, kept positions unfilled, put acting leaders in place (who are fiercely loyal to President Trump -- most often their top claim to the job!
5.      Recently, Trump named Richard Grenell, a vocal and controversial U.S. ambassador to Germany since May 2018, as the new acting director of national intelligence, replacing the current acting head of the nation's 17 spy agencies. Grenell is known to be fiercely loyal to Trump, but critics have noted that he has no background in intelligence and no top-level management experience in operations.

6.     AND NOW WE LEARN that in relation to the Department of HHS, particularly to the unit responsible for preparing for global emergencies, we are faced with an understaffed, disorganized, under-funded hollowed-out agency that is not prepared for what may be coming soon in the form of
the CORONAVIRUS
In addition, the Task Force formed under President Obama to deal with global crises was essentially destroyed by this President who has dedicated himself to throwing much of the Obama legacy on the scrap heap.  Sometimes this attitude of vengeance comes back to bite, as it has when this potential pandemic looms large.
7.     In spite of Trump’s claim that “all is well”, scientists and doctors associated with our health agencies had started  getting the word out that we are not prepared (or preparing) adequately for this pandemic, until Trump muzzled them all in order to protect and solidify the lies that everything is under control and that the virus will probably end quickly.
“Messages from the White House diverged throughout Tuesday, with White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow raising eyebrows with remarks in an CNBC interview stating that the virus was "contained" and that it was pretty close to "air-tight."  His remarks came the same day the CDC warned of an inevitable outbreak in the United States.” (MSN.com)
“Two Cabinet members at separate hearings were grilled over what lawmakers described as an insufficient response so far, while Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) said the White House's budget request to handle the disease was ‘lackluster’.” (CNN.com)
“Democrats were unsparing in their criticism, with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) saying the administration was showing "towering and dangerous incompetence" in its response to the virus.  He called for at least $3.1 billion in funding and for the administration to appoint a "czar" to oversee the response.”
Instead, Trump appointed Vice President Pence as the one to oversee the government’s response.  Regrettably,  Pence has no expertise in fighting global  pandemics or in applied science, so the mistakes already made by this administration, along with those yet to come, will inevitably play a causative role in the deaths of a large number of people who will have no hope or help from this incompetent administration.

The politicization of every event, the lack of competence, experience and expertise of its leaders, lack of attention to important information and intelligence, the indifference to scientific fact and method, the de-construction of the federal government, plus the location of information-gathering and decision-making in one person – all of it is finally being shown for what it is -- a  disaster!
Because federal agencies have been hollowed-out and de-moralized by slashed budgets and the firing of professional leadership, the federal government is unable to respond adequately to a threat of global proportions.  Thus, we find ourselves at the mercy of inept leadership and inadequate resources.

However, the catalysts for this actual and potential destruction, incompetence and corruption are those totally bamboozled and uninformed voters who continue to place us all in danger by their sycophantic support of Donald J. Trump and his minions.
But, this time around – if Trump is re-elected – the hammer of incompetence and the sickle of corruption are about to fall with devastating effect upon “Never Trumpers” and “Always Trumpers” alike.  Here are just a few of the blows coming your way, sooner rather than later:
·      cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and many other government benefits that will devastate access to the care needed by Seniors and others with special needs
·      an economy (and stock market) disrupted by the negative effects of this virus on business and consumers
·      health care changes that benefit Big Pharm and Big Drug companies but devastate ordinary families -- the return of pre-existing conditions, caps on pay-outs, higher prices for some drugs and plans that cost more for everything
·      a coronavirus epidemic in this country could take the lives of hundreds (maybe thousands) of adults and children and “Trumpers” will not be spared these agonizing outcomes
·      a recent appellate court decision could bring something quite unexpected -- once again to Trumpers and non-Trumpers alike -- and that is the withholding of millions of dollars in law enforcement grants to force states to cooperate with U.S. immigration enforcement; such penalties could potentially have a ‘whiplash’ effect on the safety parameters of areas in which many live, especially in states like New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts, Virginia and Rhode Island.
·      you could find yourself afraid to openly express your opinions for fear of personal attacks on you by the president of the United States and his henchmen; it is happening right now to whistleblowers, professional staff, to judges, and just recently to jurors in the Stone trial, singled-out by name by this president and accused by him of biased activity;
BEWARE Trumpers and never Trumpers for you could end up on an enemies list (reported to be extant in this administration) that might affect your life in ways that could cost you your job, your pension, your house, your car, and your freedom.

DONALD J. TRUMP is ultimately responsible for our plight because of his isolationism and white nationalism; his destructive ideology of de-construction, his paranoia toward any criticism, his inability to understand the necessity of applied science in our lives, and his dangerous modus operandi of appointing leaders for their loyalty rather than for their expertise, their abilities and their empathy and passion for serving others.  Frighteningly, the inexperienced Acting Deputy Director of the White House Corona Virus Task Force has had to solicit help from a larger audience via the internet for operating the global mapping of where the coronavirus is active!

We are traversing very dangerous ground here because this is not simply “authoritarianism.” Trump is hitting all the discordant notes that have been identified by researchers (such as Professor Lawrence Briggs and others) as characteristic of such groups over a long period of time.   Unfortunately, Americans are led to give much more attention to extremist views of the far Left (“socialism”) and far too little attention to the nihilistic and destructive terrorism and authoritarianism of the extremists of the far Right.

All the way back to the last half of 2016, I have warned readers of this in regard to Donald Trump, and even opined  that “the Donald” was well on his way to fulfilling those characteristics even before he was sworn in as president.  (“Fourteen Reasons to be Anti-Trump” – parts I and II – 11/21 & 11/23/2016).  Here are those 14 characteristics of fascist regimes, in brief:

1)    Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – “Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia” (like hats and T-shirts?).
2)    Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – “Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need."
3)    Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause. “The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat” like immigrants or Islamists
4)    Supremacy of the Military – “Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.”
5)    Rampant Sexism – “The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid.
6)    Controlled Mass Media – “Sometimes media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.”
7)    Obsession with National Security – “Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.”
8)    Religion and Government are Intertwined – “Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology are common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.”
9)    Corporate Power is Protected – “The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.”
10)                       Labor Power is Suppressed – “Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.”
11)                       Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – “Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.”
12)                       Obsession with Crime and Punishment – “Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.”
13)                       Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – “Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability.
14)                       Fraudulent Elections – “Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against (or even assassination of) opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.”

GET THE PICTURE?  It is essential that we keep reminding ourselves that this so-called President and his behavior must be viewed in this context.  Otherwise, we risk the same fate as has befallen many other countries whose people failed to recognize the path being taken by their elected leaders until it was too late to prevent a corrupt despotic ruler and his cronies from taking over their society and their lives.  Not recognizing what is happening is tantamount to acceptance and even encouragement of the inevitable outcomes.

The main concern of our opposition should not just be the removal of this wannabe dictator from office.  There must also be a thorough examination of the qualifications and motives of his cronies, henchmen and abettors of despotism.  Their occupation of any elective or appointed office -- or attempts to capture any office with tainted money and/or manipulative propaganda -- must be monitored and strongly opposed wherever needed.  Reforming our election system and strengthening the constitutional safeguards of our representative democracy must also receive our undivided attention, along with a firm resolve to:
VOTE THIS INCOMPETENT CORRUPT PRESIDENT and HENCHMEN OUT OF OFFICE.

TRUMP CORRUPTS RULE OF LAW -- WHAT NOW DEMOCRATS?

The vote in the Senate to acquit the President of the impeachment articles/charges, brought against him by the House, is over.  As expected, he was been found ‘Not Guilty.” Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah and Doug Jones Democrat of Alabama distinguished themselves by their votes. But now, the era of dictatorship has truly begun, for Trump will do what he is wired to do with the added incentive of a Republican Senate that has supported him in doing as he pleases.

Trump has already achieved much that despots of various countries have demonstrated to be the makings of authoritarian regimes (see my postings of the second half of 11/2016).

1)     He has co-opted (or is co-opting) the existing structures of government to his advantage.  In brief, he has:

a.     Subdued the Executive branch to his liking by:

                                                              i.       appointments of department heads who swear absolute loyalty to him

ii.      undermining or destroying the mission and purposes of those offices thereby weakening the constituencies who are served by those groups

iii.      attacked career civil servants as “Never Trumpers” or as a “deep state” that works against his agenda

iv.      co-opted the Department of Justice as his personal legal team

                                                            v.      casting doubt on the work of investigative agencies such as the FBI, CIA and others

vi.      having insulted and belittled the Generals as “losers” ‘dopes’ and ‘babies’ so that the armed forces are kept in check

vii.      reduced the budgets of agencies that he wants to control

viii.      gotten rid of consumer advocacy groups wherever possible

b.     Captured the legislative branch by co-opting their powers of:

                                                              i.      oversight

                                                            ii.      impeachment

                                                          iii.      declaring war

                                                          iv.      approving judicial appointments

                                                            v.      deputizing congressional leaders as his henchmen and using them as conduits for his agenda

c.      Is stacking the federal courts with hundreds of questionably qualified but loyal Trumpers who will find for him in every case that promotes his agenda (and probably his aggrandizement)

o   and now we learn, he is using the DOJ (and challenging the rule of law) replacing previous lawyers for Roger Stone  with DOJ personnel who will seek, to not only reduce the penalty for Stone, but attempt to undo the penalties imposed under the Mueller probe for others of Trump’s convicted staff

Now that he has captured all three branches of the government (and been helped  to do so by the U.S. Senate, and by the House’s failure to build a strong case for a pattern of abuse of office and breaking of laws), he  has increased another aspect of despotic regimes, continuing dirty work that he launched before he was even nominated for the office of president.

2)     Retaliation against political enemies to destroy their credibility:

a.     The attacks on Romney have already begun; Trump even used the National Prayer Breakfast to denigrate Romney’s name; (it is reported that a loyal Trump follower who is  member of Utah’s State Assembly, is planning to introduce legislation to allow voters to recall senators)

b.     In the State of the Union, he painted Democrats as socialists who are out to destroy this country; he will not let up on that theme for he must do as the 1930s Nazis did and grind socialists into the dirt

c.      Invade the base of the Democratic party as he did by his staged “touch-the-heart” actions toward black and brown guests at his State of the Union rally

d.     He has begun to remove people physically from their assignments so all can be painfully aware of how disloyalty is treated:  having Colonel Vindman (and his twin brother) escorted from their assignments at the White House, and then announcing the firing of Ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland; others will undoubtedly follow.

e.     Enlist and support the industrial complex as allies; use them to raise money, sponsor candidates and destroy the wrong candidates

3)     Unleash powerful forces that look like militia to intimidate some voters (like the March in Washington supporting the 2nd Amendment with many participants carrying guns), and hate groups showing up as counter- demonstrators in situations like Charlottesville

4)      Raise the ante on promoting the press as “enemies of the People”, along with greater restrictions on press at government and political events

5)     Increase the use of the “Big Lie” to confuse and play to the fears and anxieties of the Trump base; the State of the Union address served as the catalyst where gross statistical exaggerations, unverified claims or twisted numbers stood out, such as:

a.     7 mil. off food stamp rolls

b.     “This is a blue-collar boom!”

c.      #1 producer of oil and gas; energy independent

d.     12.000 new factories built with thousands more planned

e.     Tariff strategy is working

f.       Health insurance plans better and 60% are less expensive

g.      Will always protect families that have pre-existing conditions, along with Social Security and Medicare

h.     Asked for bi-partisan support for some major laws already passed by the House and lying dormant in the GOP Senate: lower drug costs, rebuilding of infrastructure and extension of family leave to all

6)     Launching War on Democrats:

a.     legislation to allow citizens to sue a Sanctuary City for damages if family member harmed by illegal immigrants was being protected by that City

b.     plan to introduce legislation banning late term abortions; right to pray in public schools; protecting 2nd Amendment rights

c.      will never allow “socialism” to destroy American Healthcare

So, here’s the deal:  TRUMP has begun advancing a dictatorial regime and a war on Democrats in order to WIN the 2020 election.

QUESTION IS:  WHAT ARE THE DEMOCRATS DOING ABOUT NOVEMBER 2020?

Supposedly:

·      blasting Trump

·      debating and presenting the issues of importance

·      spreading around some ads detrimental to Donald Trump

·      preparing to push more legislation of importance

·      expanding their ground game where candidates have the money to do so

·      trying to figure out who of the candidates can beat Donald Trump and display some unifying leadership

In the meantime, the public senses disarray and some poor organization (Iowa caucuses), lack of coordination (from the DNC and congressional leaders) and a strange quiet on the part of the freshmen who were gung-ho and out-front at the beginning of their terms.  Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have emerged as the voices and the images of the Party.  It raises some questions in my mind and probably in yours as well.

The Senate has done virtually nothing with HR #I and other very important House legislative initiatives among the 300+ bills they have passed and sent to the Senate

v WHY HAS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY BEEN VIRTUALLY SILENT ABOUT THE IMPORTANT MATTERS CONTAINED THEREIN AND STUCK IT AT LEAST EVERY OTHER DAY TO THE REPUBLICANS FOR THEIR FAILURE TO TAKE UP THESE PROPOSALS?

v WHY HAS THE DEM PARTY NOT LET THE PEOPLE KNOW THAT VIRTUALLY EVERY BILL THAT TRUMP HAS BEEN ABLE TO SIGN INTO LAW HAS BEEN BI-PARTISAN – many times sponsored or co-sponsored by Democrats – AND THEREFORE THE RESULT OF DEMOCRATIC ACTIONS NOT INACTION?

v WHY ISN’T THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY BRINGING CONSTANT INTENSE PRESSURE ON TRUMP FOR ALL THE WRONGDOING AND LIES HE IS PERPETRATING?

o   impeachment was successful in bringing forth some of the depravity and corruption of this man and his regime of criminal minds, but

o   THE ABSENCE OF PROVING A PATTERN OF CRIMINALITY, ABUSE OF POWER AND CORRUPTION WAS A FATAL MISTAKE ON THE PART OF THE CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS

v WHY DOESN’T THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAVE A “TWEETER-IN-CHIEF” OR COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR WHO MESSAGES EVERY DAY; COORDINATES STRATEGIES AND PUBLICIZES WHAT THE PARTY IS DOING RATHER THAN ALLOW MR. TRUMP TO DEFINE THAT FOR EVERYONE?

o   is that what the DNC or DCCC is supposed to do?

o   well, it’s not getting done because those two organizations are so intent on raising funds and producing candidates that they have neglected that duty

o   which raises the fundamental question:

v WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES AND AIMS OF THE DNC AND THE DCCC?

o   they are watchdogs of primaries and should prevent debacles like Iowa

o   they are responsible for debate formats but are they producing the best image and forums for the candidates?

o   are they responsible for building pipelines to grassroots organizations so that information sharing from local activists is sure to get due consideration?  E.g. how do they solicit on-going views and opinions from the grassroots?  what structures have they built to assure that conversation and collaboration is vital and on-going?

o   are they responsible for coordinating Party publicity and formulating how public information is presented?

v DOES THE PARTY NEED TO RE-ORGANIZE [perhaps along the lines of the old Organizing For America (OFA)]?

o   For instance: what conduits does the Party have to Black or Hispanic/Latino voters?  How do Black and Brown leaders at local levels get their concerns heard on a consistent basis?

o   One of the first needs is to find out what Democrats (and other progressives) at the grass-roots have on their minds, because that is where the strength of the Party exists; the people need to be heard, including members of the local democratic committees and members of other activist groups

o   Information gathering and information dissemination are key ingredients in organizing and taking needed actions: what is the capacity of the Democratic Party to do both these jobs?  In my experience, it is limited and needs much more emphasis.

o   For instance, can you tell me where the locus of communication resides?  What does it do?  Who heads it?  Why is it so hidden?  What is its purpose for being?  How many staff and volunteers work in it?

o   Do ordinary people ever get asked about how legislation will affect them; or, what problems they need resolved?

o   Another concern:  what analyses are being done on the 2016 election results, and what strategies have been instituted in the districts and States (Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) that swung that election to Trump?

o   Training potential and current activists and candidates is an essential part of organizing Democrats so just what capacity does the DNC or DCCC have for doing that?  How many campaigns at the local level are receiving training support for their efforts?

o   What is being done about voter suppression and new voter registration?  Is the Democratic Party actively resisting in states and locales where voter suppression is being carried out?  Does it even have representatives finding out who is affected? And, helping to bring people together in class action suits for loss of their fundamental franchise (perhaps by enlisting NAACP, ACLU or civil rights lawyers to take on pro bono cases where needed)?

o   And, of course, one must ask: what is the Party doing to determine how continuing foreign interference by Russia, China, etc. (through internet attacks can be blocked or destroyed?

Forgive me readers.  I have perhaps led you astray by starting out with Trump’s dictatorial behavior and then switching you to questions about the Democratic Party.  BUT, isn’t that part of the transition we need to make?  We must preclude Donald J. Trump from making all the noise and garnering at least 90% of media coverage and voter attention.  Democratic progressives must get organized well enough to stem the tide of Trump madness and to defeat this wannabe despot in November 2020.  We have no choice.  So, as I often do, here are some suggested action steps to take wherever you are:

1.     attend your local democratic committee meeting (usually monthly) and find out what they are doing and how you can assist; bring others with you

2.     join a local activist progressive group if you are not already a member

3.     attempt to connect activist group with Dem committee – suggest common activities

4.     get involved as soon as possible in a national activist group and/or in a campaign that has national significance – either of a Presidential or a Senate candidate

5.     begin to raise concerns in these groups when you see lack of purpose or organization – offer to assist in whatever improvement steps need to be taken (better to volunteer to help than to just ‘gripe’);

a.      remember you are an active member, a partner and an asset to all of these organizations – you are not just a cog in a wheel; your voice needs to be heard; your opinion is important; you have a shared leadership role to play when you bring a talent, a perception, an insight

b.     provide positive feedback to others regarding their unique contributions and encourage teamwork toward a common goal of winning back the Presidency and the Senate

That’s it for now, but there is more to come…!
